- The 5G laboratory will represent a significant advancement in the expansion of the Valenciaport Foundation’s infrastructure, providing comprehensive support for its logistics and port innovation projects.
- The initiative will drive the development of mobile communications, advanced computing, digital twins, immersive applications, and other cutting-edge technologies.
The Valenciaport Foundation has begun working on the development of an innovative 5G mobile communications laboratory (5G+ VLCPortLab) in collaboration with the Telecommunications and Multimedia Applications Institute (iTEAM) of the Universitat Politècnica de València (UPV).
In recent years, both entities have collaborated on numerous research projects at regional, national, and European levels, exploring the capabilities of next-generation communication technologies in port environments to implement new applications and use cases at the Port of Valencia.
This laboratory will serve as a specialized testing ground for validating cutting-edge applications in port environments, such as augmented reality, remote control of robots, and holographic communications, among other technologies. These tests will be conducted first in a controlled environment at UPV and later in the real port environment, which will enhance their technological maturity levels.
The laboratory will consist of a shared infrastructure located both at the Port of Valencia and UPV, connecting both entities via a high-capacity dedicated fiber optic link.
Currently, iTEAM has a private 5G network, with a new Immersive Communications Laboratory and a dedicated data center connected to the cloud, which will host the necessary servers and software and hardware components for its operation. Thanks to this collaboration, the Valenciaport Foundation will operate both a state-of-the-art 5G radio node and computing nodes at its facilities, all connected to the university’s infrastructure via fiber optic.
The 5G+ VLCPortLab will represent a significant advancement in the expansion of the Valenciaport Foundation’s infrastructure, providing comprehensive support for ongoing projects in the port sector. Projects such as the European initiative IMAGINE B5G, which will test emergency and security use cases; and the national projects of the UNICO 5G R&D plan Advancing 5G Digital Twins, which will carry out real-time digital twin pilots, or the 5GNACAR of the UNICO 5G Sectoral plan, focused on intelligent management of the 5G network.
Conceived as a driving force for future innovation projects, the 5G laboratory of the Valenciaport Foundation and iTEAM will have a significant impact on the expansion of various areas such as mobile communications, advanced computing, digital twins, and other cutting-edge advancements. Additionally, its establishment will pave the way for the Valenciaport Foundation to collaborate with companies and research and development organizations on next-generation applications and systems.
