Gema Piñero, a member of the Audio and Communications Processing Group (GTAC), and Ramón Miralles, a member of the Signal Processing Group (GTS), both from the Institute of Telecommunications and Multimedia Applications (iTEAM) at the Universitat Politècnica de València (UPV), will participate in the upcoming edition of Valencia Digital Summit (VDS) on October 23 and 24. This event, which has established Valencia as one of the main tech hubs in Southern Europe, will bring together the most promising startups, as well as corporate leaders and global investors, at the iconic City of Arts and Sciences.
In its seventh edition, “Embracing Evolution: Invest in the Leaders of Tomorrow,” VDS 2024 will feature the strategic collaboration of The Next Web (TNW), part of the Financial Times Group, and will focus on how the technological revolution is positively impacting society.
Gema Piñero, a member of the Audio and Communications Processing Group (GTAC) at UPV, will present a demo focused on monitoring bird behavior through bioacoustics and artificial intelligence, conducted in collaboration with UPV’s CVBLab. As part of a project with the University of Seville, soundscape recordings of the Albufera of Valencia have been collected over two years at 10 different locations. Using advanced AI techniques, the team aims to answer critical questions about the park’s biodiversity, the patterns of protected species, and the impact of hunting on both game and non-game birds. “With this technology, we can provide detailed and objective data on the conservation status of this key ecosystem,” Piñero commented.
Ramón Miralles, from the Signal Processing Group (GTS), will present SamLab, software designed for data analysis derived from acoustic monitoring. SamLab allows for the management of the immense volume of information generated by the recordings. Although its primary use is focused on cetacean research, the program is highly adaptable for analyzing any type of audio signals. “With SamLab, we make it possible to efficiently analyze marine ecosystems in a non-invasive way, which holds great potential for conservation and environmental science,” Miralles emphasized.
VDS 2024 promises to be a key meeting point for innovation and technology leaders, with the participation of experts like Gema Piñero and Ramón Miralles, who will showcase how new technological tools are contributing to the protection of the environment and biodiversity.
