Ivana Gasulla, researcher from the Photonics Research Labs (PRL) group at UPV’s iTEAM, selected for The Photonics100 2025

The 2025 Photonics100 list has been unveiled, celebrating the remarkable achievements of 100 leading individuals driving innovation in photonics and optical technology worldwide. Associate Professor and Researcher Ivana Gasulla, from the Photonics Research Labs (PRL) at the iTEAM of the UPV, has been selected to be part of “The Photonics100” for 2025.

The Photonics100, curated by a panel of industry experts, highlights scientists, engineers, and business leaders whose work is reshaping sectors from aerospace and telecommunications to quantum technologies and healthcare. This list, compiled annually by the journal Electro Optics, highlights the 100 most influential figures in the field of photonics worldwide, representing a highly prestigious international recognition.

Gasulla’s expertise combines mainly the areas of microwave and optical signal processing along with innovative multicore and few-mode fiber architectures. In recent years, she was awarded of the prestigious Consolidator Grants from the European Research Council (ERC) to develop novel high-performance specialty optical fibers for specific application to next-generation wireless communications.

Her research accomplishments, spanning from Stanford to Valencia, have resulted in over 150 publications, including significant contributions to Nature Photonics, as well as the issuance of 7 granted patent families and the recognized 2008 Graduate Student Fellowship from the IEEE Photonics Society. Currently, she serves as Senior Editor for the IEEE Journal of Selected Topics in Quantum Electronics, among other roles.

Gasulla’s entrepreneurial side is reflected by her co-founding of the UPV spin-off company iPronics Programmable Photonics. This young deep-tech company was recognized by Nature in 2020 as one of the 32 best spin-offs to watch globally and has received one of the prestigious Transition-to-Innovation Grants from the European Innovation Council (EIC).

By joining the ranks of other esteemed researchers from the PRL at iTEAM, such as José Capmany and Pascual Muñoz —who have also been recognized in previous years— along with Daniel Pérez, the current CTO of iPronics Programmable Photonics, Gasulla further enhances the legacy of excellence at UPV.

Gasulla’s inclusion in “The Photonics100” highlights the commitment and significance of her work at the Photonics Research Labs, once again positioning UPV as a leading reference in the field of photonics on an international level.

Congratulations on this great achievement, Ivana!
