From April 7 to 11, Universitat Politècnica de València (UPV) hosted the 3rd Training School of the European project TOAST (Touch-enable Tactile Internet Training Network and Open Source Testbed), a doctoral network funded by the European Union’s Horizon Europe Marie Skłodowska-Curie programme.
The Training School in Valencia has been organized by the UPV team led by Professor David Gómez-Barquero, member of the Mobile Communications Group (MCG) at iTEAM and principal investigator of the project. Throughout the week, the doctoral candidates are receiving advanced training in technical topics such as 5G/B5G Wireless Communications for Tactile Internet services, and Deep Learning for Visual and Time Series Analysis, as well as transferable skills on Entrepreneurship, Research & Communication, delivered by leading international experts.
The panel of lecturers for this Training School includes:
- Joachim Sachs (Ericsson)
- Alexandros Iosifidis (Tampere University)
- Florian Saegerbrecht (TU Dresden)
- Jaime Jesús Ruíz Alonso (Nokia)
- David Gómez-Barquero (UPV)
- Eckehard Steinbach (TU Munich)
- Frank Fitzek (TU Dresden)
The event’s rich agenda also includes cultural and networking activities to enjoy the city of Valencia, featuring guided tours and dinners to discover Valencian cuisine and foster connections among participants. In addition, TOAST’s training programme will continue the following week, also in Valencia, with the PhD Course on Future Communications, taking place from April 14 to 16. This event further consolidates Valencia as a European hub for advanced communication technologies.
The course will offer intensive training on advanced networking, reinforcement learning, and performance evaluation of mobile networks, combining theoretical foundations with practical sessions to address the technological challenges of future communication systems.
The PhD course on Future Communications includes the following lectures:
- Advanced Networking, by G. Nguyen (TU Dresden)
- Reinforcement Learning, by R. Combes (CentraleSupélec)
- Performance Evaluation and Simulation of Mobile Networks, by S. El Ayoubi (CentraleSupélec)
About the TOAST Project
The TOAST project aims to train the next generation of researchers to tackle the critical challenges of the Tactile Internet, an emerging technology that will enable real-time remote interaction through the sense of touch. The network brings together 11 partners from 6 European countries (Denmark, Germany, Italy, Spain, France, and Sweden), including 6 universities, 1 research institution and 3 industry partners, and will train 10 doctoral candidates over the next three years.
The TOAST project is funded by the European Union’s Horizon Europe research and innovation programme (HORIZON-MSCA-2022-DN-01) under the Marie Skłodowska-Curie grant agreement No. 101073465.
